Video Interview Tips for Emirates, Etihad & Qatar candidates

The ME3 airlines, Emirates, Etihad & Qatar have re-commenced their recruitment for cabin crew as travel borders start to reopen, albeit slowly and cautiously.

Open Days? Most unlikely with the Delta variant still spreading uncontrollably especially amongst the unvaccinated people. It does seem like it is now the pandemic for the unvaccinated population. We hope that many of you aspiring to be cabin crew for Emirates, Etihad and Qatar have made a considerable effort to get yourselves vaccinated with the international recognised vaccines. Vaccination passports for travel without quarantine and PCR tests are likely to become the norm in the post pandemic period. If you do want to be a cabin crew, please try to get yourself vaccinated as it will be viewed as a plus point on your CV and are likely to be given priority by the three ME3 airlines.

COVID-19 and initial interviews:
Many airlines will have to change the way and style that they recruit candidates. While small budget airlines may still hold face to face interviews, this is not possible for the likes of Emirates, Etihad and Qatar until social distancing restrictions and travel without quarantine becomes possible as the virus fades.

It is now more important than ever to ensure your video interview skills are up to scratch. This will now be the initial stage following your online application at the company’s recruitment portal. This also means time and money savings for both you and the recruiters.

It also means that Emirates, Qatar and Etihad recruiters are able to watch the interview again rather than relying on notes which could lead to a fairer basis for candidate selection. The system is also capable of picking up on your body language and active listening skills.

For you as the candidate, this new video format does bring about certain challenges that you ought to know. Connectivity problems remain the issue with some candidates as not all countries offer high speed broadband. Secondly, some of us are just not comfortable on camera and may put some people at a disadvantage. However, you can overcome these issues with preparation.

Research the format

It is important that you familiarise yourself on the video format. In the main, there are two types of video interviews:

- Pre-recorded - This is the most likely video interview that you will experience at the first elimination stage of the recruitment process. This is also a much less personal experience as you will not be speaking live to a real person at the other end. You will be presented with pre-recorded questions on screen, and you are given instructions to record your answers on video, often in 2 minutes per question. You may also be given questions to type out your answers. This helps Emirates, Etihad or Qatar recruiters to watch the videos at their own convenience. for you, it can be awkward, if you aren’t used to recording yourself or lose your thought process 15 seconds after starting the answer.

- Live - This is very similar to a regular face to face interview with your recruiter. This was used at the final interview before we went into the lockdown, and will be the process used if you make it to the final interview. The live interview enable your recruiter to recreate the traditional meeting room style interview and can be conducted with candidates around the world without the need for assessment days or travel. For the live final interview, treat your conversations the same way as you would at the airline office or hotel and always build a rapport with your recruiter / interviewer.

Choose your location

Plan well in advance - your choice of room, background, noise and ensure people or your family will not disturb you. Ensure you show your recruiter a tidy room and always use a clean and simple background. The background you use can reflect your personality so be mindful of this.

You need to give some thought to lighting. To ensure you do not get strong contrasts of light or dark shadows, use natural light from a large window or put a white cool LED lamp in front of you and adjust the camera and light distance so that you do not appear overly bright.

Please use a desktop or laptop computer for the interview and never your phone. Switch off your phone so that it does not ring or get distracted by notification sounds which can be annoying to the recruiter.

Let everyone living in your home know that you don’t wish to be disturbed for the next half hour or so.

Dress in business outfit

You may be at home but you should still dress in a business suit to give a professional first impression.

Use positive body language

Make good eye contact, do not slouch, do not sit on your bed, listen and take positive interest in anything teh recruiter says. Ensure your camera is at eye level and you should look at the lens and not your screen.

For the pre-recorded interviews, ensure you give the impression that you are speaking to a “live person”, maintain your positive attitude and show positive body language.

Speak slowly and clearly.

Things to check a day before your interview
Test your computer for audio and video to ensure the payback is reasonable. If you are on wifi, check to ensure that your connectivity is good. Remember to connect your computer to the mains and do not run the risk of batteries running out.

On the day of the interview, if you come across any technical issues, ensure you mention this to the recruiter, e.g. sound issues, you can’t hear the questions well. Sometimes, a quick redial will cure the problem.

For pre-recorded interviews, if you come across a technical hitch, mention this.
